Tax Credit is cited as new movie is to be made in Philly
A new romantic comedy starring Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson, and Reese WItherspoon is slated to begin filming in Philadelphia, and the Rendell administration attributes the state film tax credit as the force that brought this film to Pennsylvania.
The film, directed by James Brooks, who previously directed Nicholson in “Terms of Endearment” and “As Good As It Gets,” proves how important the Pennsylvania film tax credit. “This movie is one more more testament to the worthiness of Pennsylvania’s film tax credit and the movie production industry it has helped to create here,” said acting DCED (Department of Community and Economic Development) Secretary George Cornelius.
The state film tax credit has come under fire by Republicans who claim that the tax credit is just giving money away to Hollywood producers, but Rendell rests that it helps bring jobs and new taxes to Pennsylvania. This new movie should bring $6 million into the Southeastern Pennsylvania economy and should provide at least 250 full-time jobs and 1,200 part-time jobs during the course of its two months of shooting.
