Local producer's film wins top British honors
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"Control," a film produced by Todd Eckert of Pittsburgh, won top honors in 10th annual British Independent Film Awards sponsored by the UK Film Council.
The movie examines the life and music of Ian Curtis, the Joy Division lead singer who committed suicide just as the storied British band was preparing for its first U.S. tour in 1980.
The awards were announced at the Roundhouse in London yesterday.
Eckert, who lives in the Mexican War Streets, has previously credited the choice of Sam Riley as the lead actor for much of the success of "Control" which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Other honors announced by the group in London yesterday included Judi Dench for Best Actress for her performance in "Notes on a Scandal" and Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor for his performance in "Eastern Promises."
