Teaching Artist

Under the direction of the Program Director, Steeltown Teaching Artists are responsible for program implementation in one or more Steeltown Film Academies. Teaching Artists facilitate 1-3 hour lessons on the basics of filmmaking with high school students in schools, afterschool programs and community organizations. Following Steeltown’s LACES curriculum, Teaching Artist are responsible for leading the classroom, preparing materials and lesson plans, teaching the students, archiving footage and tracking/managing equipment.

Teaching Artists should have skill and desire to teach high school students and work with diverse populations (i.e. gender, ethnicity, disabilities, etc.). Experience in one or more of the following fields is required: animation, audio production, broadcasting, editing, filmmaking, graphic design, journalism, performance, photography playwriting, screenwriting, direction, etc.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate 1-3 hour lessons on the basics of filmmaking, discussions and hands-on technical instruction. Deliver age and contextually appropriate lesson plans.
  • Prepares for sessions by planning lessons, securing equipment and supplies, and learning materials.
  • Properly label and archive film footage, files required reports after classes.
  • Attends all required meetings, classes and trainings as requested by Steeltown.
  • Reports to and communicates with Y&M Director on a consistent basis.
  • Supports and represents Steeltown’s Y&M Program at events and meetings in the community.
  • Maintains program evaluation sheets, attendance records, support program evaluations, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications Specific to this Position:

  • Associate’s degree or 5-7 years work experience required
  • Ability to obtain all clearances needed to work with children
  • Must be able to work afternoons, evenings and/or weekends, as required
  • Must provide own transportation
  • Ability to lift and/or move 25 pounds
  • Demonstrate the ability to engage, challenge and interest students through communication and digital media
  • Positive attitude and highly motivated
  • Willingness to create a safe, supportive and inclusive creative environment for the students
  • Willingness to work with diverse populations (i.e. gender, ethnicity, disabilities, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and professionalism
  • Strong organizational skills, detail oriented, and the ability to multitask
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, basic office hardware and editing software
  • Punctuality, regular attendance and completing all tasks with honesty and integrity

Teaching Assistant

SEP’s Youth & Media Department is looking for an innovative, creative and passionate Teaching Assistant to assist Teaching Artists in facilitating digital media projects for in-school, afterschool and community-based programming. Steeltown’s Youth & Media Department is dedicated to teaching and empowering middle and high school students to create digital media that matters.

Teaching Assistants will be managed by the Youth & Media Program Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Reports to and communicates with Y&M Manager and On-Site Supervisor on a consistent basis
  • Assists Teaching Artists with facilitating 1-3 hour lessons on the basic of filmmaking, which include but not limited to: discussions and hands-on technical instruction
  • Assists with disseminating and securing pre- and post surveys, learning materials, etc.
  • Attend all required meetings, classes and trainings
  • Support and willingness to represent SEP Youth & Media Program at events and meetings in the Community
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications to Perform Duties of the Position:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to obtain all clearances needed to work with children
  • Ability to work afternoons, evenings and/or weekends, as required
  • Must provide own transportation
