New documentary about Salk's polio vaccine focuses on the Pittsburgh story
A new documentary created by the Steeltown Entertainment Project shows how the city of Pittsburgh played an integral role in Jonas Salk’s discovery of the polio vaccine.
On Wednesday, April 14th “The Shot Felt ‘Round the World” will premiere at a private screening at the Twentieth Century club in Oakland, mere blocks away from where the vaccine was developed. Many prominent people will be in attendance including Dr. Peter Salk and Dr. Jonathan Salk, sons of Jonas Salk. Carl Kurlander, director of the documentary, says the film is “a call to action for many of the challenges we face today, but it resonates particularly for the Jewish community, which frequently cites Jonas Salk as one of its own heroes, to remind us of just what can be accomplished with the collective effort and selfless spirit which was such a part of developing the polio vaccine.”
