Documentary captures Salk's heroic bid for polio vaccine at University of Pittsburgh
The one-hour documentary provides insight into the Salk polio vaccine, a dramatic medical breakthrough that nearly extinguished the terrifying disease.
Almost 58,000 Americans contracted polio during the last major epidemic in the United States in 1952. The virus caused paralysis, breathing problems and, in many cases, death. Jonas Salk and his team of skilled doctors and nurses created the vaccine after years of research at Pitt. Led by local screenwriter and filmmaker, Carl Kurlander, the Steeltown Entertainment Project will show it’s feature documentary at the Twentieth Century Club in Oakland at an invitation-only world premiere event.
